Record anything on your screen effortlessly

With Scrim, you can record your screen, spotlight your cursor, ripple every click, zoom in on the action, add your face and export a clean MP4, all on your computer.

Record once. Let Scrim do the polish.

Eight features that turn a plain screen recording into a video people can follow.

Auto zoom

Scrim zooms in around your clicks, follows the cursor while you work, then eases back out, so viewers always see the part of the screen that matters. Choose how far it zooms, how long it holds and how smooth it feels, or turn it off.

It is planned from your mouse activity when you stop recording and applied when you export, so you can change it afterwards.

One screen

Pick a cursor style, set the zoom, switch your camera and microphone on or off, press Start and drag a box over the part of the screen to record. Prefer the whole display or a single window? Choose that instead.

Cursor

A soft halo marks the cursor and a ripple answers every click, so people can follow what you do. Use halo and ripples, halo only, ripples only, or neither.

Face camera

Put your face in a bubble. Drag it, snap it to a corner, resize it and choose a circle or a rounded square. It records as its own track, so you can still move it after you finish.

Backgrounds

Set your recording on a gradient, a pattern or your own image, with padding, rounded corners and a soft shadow, so even a plain window looks finished.

Trim and cut

Drag the ends to trim and cut a section from the middle, then play it back to check. Edits are saved beside the recording, so your original file is never changed.

Export

Choose resolution, frame rate and quality, then export an MP4 with H.264 video and AAC sound that plays everywhere. No watermark, and you decide where the file goes.

Shortcuts

Start and stop from any app with global shortcuts. Ctrl+Shift+R starts and Ctrl+Shift+S stops and exports. Change either one to suit you.

Also included

  • Pause and resume

Stop to think without leaving a gap in the video.

  • Before and after

Compare the original with the zoomed version side by side before you export.

  • Screenshots

Capture a full display, a region or a window as a PNG. Save it to your folder or copy it to the clipboard.

  • Safe recording

Footage is written to disk as you record, so a crash does not cost you the video. Scrim offers to recover it.

  • Your files stay yours

Recordings are saved to the folder you choose. Nothing is uploaded and there is no account.

  • No watermark

Your export is a plain MP4 with nothing added to it.

Use cases

Anywhere a screen needs explaining, a recording that points at the right thing beats a paragraph of instructions.

Download Scrim

We could not load the latest release from GitHub. Get the installers from the Releases page (opens in a new tab).

Windows

An installer for 64 bit Windows 10 and 11.

Download for Windows
Need help?

Until the installer is signed, Windows SmartScreen may warn you before it runs.

Choose More info, then Run anyway.

macOS

A disk image for Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.

Download for macOS
Need help?

If macOS says it cannot verify the app, open System Settings, then Privacy and Security, and choose Open Anyway.

The first time you record, allow Scrim under Screen Recording, and under Accessibility so cursor effects can follow your mouse.

This build has had less testing than Windows. If something breaks, open an issue.

Linux

An AppImage and a deb package for 64 bit Linux.

Download for Linux
Need help?

Make the AppImage executable and run it, or install the deb package with your package manager.

On X11 you get everything. On Wayland, cursor effects and auto zoom are off, because Wayland does not let apps watch the mouse. Recording itself works.

You probably have questions.

So we answered them below. When you use Scrim, you are in control.

Is Scrim free?

Yes. Scrim is free and open source under the MIT license. There is no subscription and no watermark on your exports.

Do I need to sign up?

No. Scrim has no account and no sign in, so you can start recording as soon as it is installed. The download form asks for your name and email so downloads can be counted, and that is all.

Are my videos saved to the cloud?

No. Your videos are saved in a folder on your computer, and nothing is uploaded, synced or shared unless you choose to send the exported file yourself.

Which systems does it run on?

Windows 10 and 11 (64 bit), macOS on Apple Silicon and Intel, and Linux (AppImage and deb). Windows has had the most testing. If something breaks on macOS or Linux, open an issue on GitHub.

How does auto zoom work?

While you record, Scrim logs where the mouse moves and clicks. When you stop, it plans a camera path that zooms in around bursts of clicks, follows the cursor and eases back out. The plan is applied when you export, so you can change it afterwards.

Can I control the zoom, or turn it off?

Yes. Set the zoom level from 1.2 times to 3 times, how long it holds after a click and how smooth it feels, or switch auto zoom off completely.

Can I record my face and my voice?

Yes. Your camera records as its own track in a bubble you can drag, resize and snap to a corner. The microphone has its own switch, so you decide when it is on.

Where are my recordings saved?

In the folder you choose. Footage is written to disk while you record, so if the app or your computer crashes, Scrim offers to recover the recording the next time it opens.

Will editing change my original recording?

No. Trims and cuts are saved in a small edit list next to the recording. Your original file is never modified.

What does it export?

An MP4 with H.264 video and AAC sound, which plays almost everywhere. You choose the resolution, frame rate and quality, and where the file goes.

Can I take screenshots?

Yes. Capture a full display, a region or a single window as a PNG, then save it to your folder or copy it to the clipboard.

What does this website collect?

Only what the download form needs: your name, your email, the system you chose, the app version, a hashed copy of your IP address and a shortened browser string. There is no analytics, no tracking cookies and no third party scripts. The privacy page has the details.
